Lithuanian Foundation Scholarship Program

The Lithuanian Foundation believes that students who are active in their community are developing leadership skills that will benefit them and  those around them in the future.  The Foundation concentrates its resources on those students who have demonstrated an involvement and volunteerism in the Lithuanian community or in the community at large.  As such, the Lithuanian Foundation strives to ensure the continuity of the Lithuanian culture and traditions by contributing to the development of future leaders in the Lithuanian community.

Funding Priorities

The Lithuanian Foundation is an émigré organization.  As such, priorities are given to students studying outside the borders of Lithuania.  In some cases, donor members have established special funds to support areas of study in Lithuania proper.  Students applying from Lithuania must present documentation that tuition is not paid for by the state.

Restrictions

The Lithuanian Foundation grants scholarships for one academic year at a time.  Applicants will need to submit applications each academic year in their degree program.

The Foundation will not consider the following types of scholarship requests.

1. Students enrolled in a part-time course of study. Only those enrolled in a full time course of study will be considered.  However, special funding is available for students pursuing studies related to Lithuanian language, Lithuanian history, or Lithuanian folklore at an institution of higher learning.

2. Students enrolled in associate or certificate program. Only those pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree program will be considered.  By exception, special funding is available for students pursuing further non-degree training in the medical field of pathology.

3. Students not yet accepted by an accredited college, university or other academic institution. Master’s and Doctoral students who have not received their official acceptance letter may apply by presenting documentation that the application process is in progress.

4. Non-citizen applicants without a valid student visa for the country in which they wish to study.

5. Lithuanian citizens enrolled in a Bachelor‘s degree program in Lithuania or a foreign country. These applicants will be considered by exception only.  Special funding is available for students from the Karaliaucius/Seiniai region.

Review Process

All requested documentation submitted by the application deadline will be reviewed by the Scholarship Sub-Committee, which might also request supplementary documentation during the review process.  The Scholarship Subcommittee meets and deliberates final recommendations for scholarships which are then presented to the Grants Committee during its spring allocation meeting.

Approval of Scholarships

The Grants Committee presents all scholarship and project grant recommendations to the Lithuanian Foundation Board of Directors, which has final approval of each allocation.

Generally, an applicant should expect notification of whether a scholarship has been granted by post or email on or before July 30.  If a scholarship has been granted, the applicant will be required to present, after the start of the fall semester, official documentation of full time enrollment in the course of study at the  institution indicated on the application.  Scholarships checks are issued in the name of the scholarship recipient in November and December  if necessary enrollment documentation has been presented.

The Foundation can only fund a fraction of the requests that are reviewed.  In some cases, excellent applicants cannot be funded because of funding limitations.  A denial of a scholarship is not to be seen as a reflection on the quality of the applicant.

How to apply

The Foundation uses an electronic application process that requires that all supplementary documentation be attached to the application before the application can be submitted. Completion of the application form in Lithuanian is preferred, though not required.

Applicants may submit their completed application with all required attachments at any time after the posting of the 2010 scholarship forms in the beginning of January.. However, in order to be considered for the current scholarship granting period during which funding for the 2010-2011 academic year will be determined, completed applications must be submitted by midnight on  March 15, 2010.  As there is only one scholarship allocation period each year, additional funding will not be available until new applications are accepted for the 2011-2012 academic year.

In order to remove their application from  “draft” status, applicants will have to click “submit”.  If any of the required documentation is missing, the submission will not go through.  Applicants should, therefore, begin collecting required documentation as soon as possible.  If technical difficulties interfere with attachment of a document, the Foundation must by contacted by email at admin@lithfund.org by March 12 for an exception.  Without an exception letter from the Foundation office, the application will be considered late and will be deliberated only if there are funds available after applications submitted by the deadline are reviewed.

Recommended steps

Register as a scholarship applicant using the link. Only those who are registered on this site will receive any special notices by email.

2. Download the “2010 LF STIPENDIJOS JUODRASTIS SCHOLARSHIP DRAFT” form the Lithuanian Foundation website.  All questions on the internet form will be in the draft, so that applicants can prepare responses to the questions even when they do not have access to the internet.  Once on the internet, you will be able to “copy” and “paste” into the appropriate spaces on the internet application.  The Draft will not be accepted in lieu of the on-line application.

3. Download the “2010 LF  MOKSLAS IR VEIKLA EDUCATON” form from the Lithuanian Foundation website. It will need to be completed and attached to the appropriate part of the application.

4. Download the “2010 LF STIPENDIJU FINANSAI FINANCIALS” form from the Lithuanian Foundation website.  It will need to be completed and attached to the appropriate part of the application.

Request/obtain all other required documentation in time to be attached to the application by March 15th.    You will need to attach:

1. Passport size photograph

2. Copies of your birth certificate, passport, Permanent Resident Card or other documentation of citizenship.

3. Non citizen applicants wishing to study in the USA must attach a copy of a valid student visa or the “INS Nonimmigrant F-11-20-ID” form signed by the student,

4. Latest transcript showing current GPA.  A transcript stamped “issued to student” is acceptable, but a print out from the internet is not.

5. Letter of acceptance from the academic institution that you will be attending.   Masters and Doctoral students who have not received acceptance letters by the March 15th deadline may attach acknowledgement from the institution that the application is being considered and possible notification dates of acceptance. Bachelors students who are continuing their studies in the same institution as the prior year may attaché a “letter of good standing” if the acceptance letter is not available.

6. Two recommendations.

a. At least one recommendation from a professor/teacher at your current school.  If the professor objects and wants to mail the recommendation directly to the Foundation, the office will attach the recommendation to your application.

b. The second recommendation can be from a leader of an organization in which you are actively involved.  Recommendations from family and friends are not acceptable.

8. “2010 LF STIPENDIJU FINANSAI FINANCIALS” from found on the Foundation website.

A generic statement of tuition costs from the internet is not acceptable.

Additional information

For those who do not have scanning capability, we have provided US applicants only with a “fax to file” feature on the internet.  This will allow you to fax a document to a toll-free number and get back a PDF document that you will be able to attach to the application.

Applicants who completed on line applications in 2009 can log on using the same user name and password and print the packet to see information from previous years.  The packet will be in PDF format.  If you have not saved uploaded documents in your computer, you can select portions of the PDF and copy/paste into separate documents.  If you sent documents you need for the current application process directly to the Foundation offices, you will not be able to see them. If you need these 2009 documents for attachment to the 2010 application, contact the foundation offices at admin@lithfund.org, so that we can send them to you for reattachment.
